LIPID PROFILE

Lipid profile is a basic diagnostic test for abnormalities in lipids, such as cholesterol and triglycerides. It helps to determine the risk of atherosclerosis which if untreated, may lead to coronary disease, stroke, or heart attack.

Who is the lipid profile for?

The test is recommended for all women above 45 and men above 35 years of age. It is, however, best to have the first test earlier – when one is around 20. The sooner some abnormalities are detected and proper treatment introduced, the less harmful effect high cholesterol will have on the blood vessels.

The test is absolutely necessary for patients from high risk group: those suffering from diabetes, high blood pressure, smokers or patients whose family members suffered from coronary diseases at an early age.

The profile includes the following tests: Triglycerides, cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, Non-HDL cholesterol

IT IS WORTH TO KNOW:

What symptoms might indicate high cholesterol and possible atherosclerosis:

  • problems with concentration and memory
  • discomfort while walking accompanied with legs pain
  • chest pain called coronary pain – the appearance of this symptom indicates advanced atherosclerosis and should be treated immediately
  • fatty deposits on the eyelids, wrists or Achilles tendon
